Climate Café Pekalongan

I was inspired by Climate Café® Pekalongan, where we watched the film “Demo(k)rasi: Keadilan Iklim Bagi Seluruh Rakyat Indonesia.” One part that struck me deeply was Landscape 2: The North Coast of Java Crisis, showing how Sayung in Demak, Central Java, is sinking due to rising seas. It reminded me that the climate crisis is not distant—it is already reshaping lives and communities in Indonesia.

I held a two-hour Climate Café®-style session in Pekalongan with Scouts and local youth. We began with reflections from the film, then moved into small group discussions on coastal impacts and local adaptation ideas. The informal setting encouraged everyone to share, connect personal stories, and imagine solutions together.

I learned that visual stories, like the sinking villages in Sayung, make the climate crisis feel real and urgent. What’s needed now is to transform this awareness into local action. Climate Cafés can empower youth to speak up, collaborate, and design responses rooted in their own communities.
