Building Capacity for Disability Awareness

Our inspiration came from wanting children with disabilities in Fiji to receive the support they need earlier and closer to their communities. Access to screening and specialist services can be difficult for families, and a child’s support needs may go unrecognized, affecting their learning, communication and participation. We wanted to strengthen the skills of the people already working alongside these children—teachers, Scout leaders and volunteers.
We executed the project through structured training that combined disability awareness, inclusive practices and practical screening skills. During the workshop, teachers participated in a hands-on refresher on conducting hearing and eyesight screening using the apps. They revisited screening procedures and practiced using the digital tools.
We learned that disability awareness needs to be supported by practical skills. The hands-on refresher using screening apps highlighted the value of regular practice and clear procedures for teachers. We also recognized that children with different disabilities require individual approaches to communication, assistance and participation. Collaboration among teachers, Scout leaders, volunteers, families and health professionals is therefore important for providing consistent support.
