Beacon View PS turning pages together

The Scouting-in-Schools team at Beacon View Primary wanted to provide learners with an exciting opportunity to engage with reading and explore new skills. Mikayla Petersen explained that the project was driven by a desire to teach something new and see learners’ enthusiasm grow. By creating a supportive, fun literacy environment, the initiative aimed to spark interest in reading and help children gain confidence in their abilities.
Learners wrote and read short stories, explored word meanings, and practised dictionary use. Due to delays in library card access, school library cards were issued to ensure participation. Yeboneers guided learners through comprehension, teamwork, and reading exercises, helping them engage actively and overcome challenges while building literacy and confidence.
Mikayla Petersen noted that learners are challenged differently academically and require tailored support. She learned how to interact with different age groups and adapt teaching strategies. The project demonstrated the importance of patience, mentorship, and practical guidance in helping learners develop literacy skills and confidence, reinforcing that even small interventions can make a meaningful impact.
