Arrowe Park Greenhouse Project
When Arrowe Park was donated to SCOUTS SA in the 1950s, it was in a rural setting. With growing urbanisation, the campsite is now situated near big roads and suburbs. To ensure it remains a refuge for Scouts and local wildlife, we need to enable an automated irrigation system and replace the loss of older trees, accelerated by shot hole borer and storms, with indigenous trees suitable for the climate, resistant to disease and that can provide for Scouts and wildlife.
The greenhouse was renovated and the irrigation system installed, Various seeds were germinated and placed together with over 20 seedlings and 40 trees in the greenhouse. Over the course of the summer, further cuttings and seedlings were planted. Growth has been rapid in the greenhouse and by the JOTA JOTI weekend in October 2024 it was possible to start planting out the first plants and trees in Arrowe Park.
The Scouts and Rovers participating learned more about indigenous seedlings, plants and trees. This included, the varieties, their specific needs in order to grow and thrive, and where the best place is to plant them when ready.
