#Scouts4MentalHealth
Mental health is an important component of well-being that is often overlooked. The stats on how much we neglect mental issues are alarming. This is why for my Scout of the World Award I decided to tackle this important subject AND RAISE AWARENESS TO A #100Scouts on mental health and wellbeing. This project will be tackling issues such as depression and insecurity and neglect among young people. This I will do through strategically partnering with professionals in the field who have more expertise than I do in this subject.
A recent study by the South African Anxiety and Depression Group (SADAG) revealed alarming statistics which show that nine percent of all deaths among teenagers are due to suicide in South Africa.
FURTHER STUDIES BY SADAG FOUND THAT:
• The age group of between 10-19 is the highest risk group for suicide.
• 38,3% of teens felt so hopeless that they sought help or counselling
• 31,5% have attempted suicide and needed medical treatment.
• 9,5% of all non-natural teen deaths are due to suicide.
These statistics have inspired me to research more about mental health and ways to raise awareness about this among teenagers, especially Scouts. Most teenagers have never been to a psychologist or sought counseling. This leads to depression, loneliness, and feelings of hopelessness.
My project will be launching the campaign #Scouts4MentalHealth to promote mental health awareness among youth. At the end of the project, I will organize an event with local psychologists where Scouts and youth can take part in to seek counseling and have professionals to talk to. This will be during the 2018 JOTA JOTI Celebration.
I will be uploading updates from today onwards on the progress. Join me for the journey. Its going to be lit
