Removal of exotic plants from a nature reserve
We will be clearing out alien trees that use our precious natural resources (water)
We worked in the Nature Reserve adjacent to our Scout Hall in Hillcrest, KZN, South Africa. The cubs and scouts met at the Hall and proceeded to the Nature Reserve where we were directed to certain areas to remove non- indigenous plants by cutting down the larger plants, digging up the roots or poisoning the roots under the supervision of a warden.
The indigenous plants in the around areas flourished and the animals moved back into this area.
If we leave the saplings to grow for too long, they become very difficult to remove.
To date, 8 tons of alien invasive plants have been removed from the reserve
