In October 2012 SCOUTS New Zealand with the help of Messengers of Peace funding launched an outreach campaign to involve young people and adults from ethnic communities to get involved in Scouting. The programme involved the St George’s Scout Group in Papatoetoe, the Greater Auckland Indian Community council, met, Muslim community officers, and members of the local Maori Marae in Mangakino. In 2014 the programme was extended to the Brockville Scout Group which is predominantly Maori / Pacifika community was also extended to Pahia, a rural community north of Auckland, a traditional Maori area. A wide variety of outdoor activities such as camps and outings were supported by Messengers of Peace funding. Over 82 youth benefitted from Outdoor experiences with the support of MoP funding. A number of training opportunities were provided to adult leaders using MoP funding including Initial and Practical Training as well as Advanced Wood badge training. In the case of the Brockville Group parents were coached in the role and functions of the committee which included managing funds, running a committee and leadership etc. Fourteen leaders for a new Muslim Group in West Auckland were trained following advertising in local Indian newspapers. Two Scouts and a Leaders were assisted to attend the New Zealand National Jamboree in 2014.
