OBERVING INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR OZONE LAYER DEPLETION

OBERVING INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR OZONE LAYER DEPLETION

OBSERVING THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR OZONE LAYER DEPLETION

RATIONALE

One of the most serious problems that the world faces today is the depletion of the Ozone layer. The Ozone layer, a fragile shields of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun thus helping to preserve life on the planet. As such, it is paramount that we protect the Ozone layer from harmful substances such as HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorucarbonate) and powerful greenhouse gases that contribute to the thinning of the Ozone layer

Commemorating the 1987 signing of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone and layer, the day advocates activities that create awareness on the topic related to the climate change and ozone depletion. This special day is held on September 16th to mark the day back in 1987 when the Montreal Protocol was signed.

Bhutan acceded to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of Ozone Layer in 2004 and ratified the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete Ozone Layer in the same year. Since then, the mission to phase out Ozone Depletion Substances (ODS) started and is still in progress with support from National Environment Commission of Bhutan and stakeholders concerned.

As rest of the communities around the country and the world celebrates the day,   scouts the nature lover of Sherubling CS and scouts in the rest of the schools under the Trongsa Dzongkhag have also joined in celebrating the ‘International day for the perseveration of the ozone layer’ on 16th of September, 2019 with the view of creating awareness and sensitizing the students on the importance of the Ozone layer.

The International ay for the preservation of the Ozone layer was observed to achieve the following objectives:

  • To generate the sense of awareness among students on the importance of the Ozone layer
  • To encourage the scouts and rest of the youth in taking up the role against climate change
  • To gather the knowledge and ideas for how the menace that is destructing our earth can be controlled

To achieve the set objectives, the following activities were organized during the celebration of the International day for the preservation of the Ozone layer:

  1. A special session - as an educational initiative to make aware on:
  1. Ozone Layer and its importance
  2. Effect of depleting ozone layer to human health, plants & trees, environment, aquatic organisms, chemical, biological, and microbial process, materials and on the ground level smog
  3. What are the Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) and its common uses?

  1. Essay and Poster competition based on  theme of the day for this year
  2. Quiz competition among the students
  3. Wearing green cloth and singing slogan (Eg; ‘Protect the ozone layer! Save life on earth!’ ‘Earth without ozone, is like a house without a roof.’)
  4. Youth speech- on their stories of success related to climate action and how they would contribute by taking the role in climate action
  5. Pledges and Commitment –a commitment campaign where scouts and rest of the students are encouraged to be it prime mover while undertaking action on climate change – to preserve ozone depletion.
