Little Smiles
In 2023, I was inspired when my brother and his friends volunteered at a Kids' Home. As a scout, I wanted to help too. During the 57th Colombo Camporee, a session on the Messengers of Peace (MoP) Badge sparked my interest. I spoke to my troop leader and, with support from my leaders, family, and friends, I decided to pursue the badge—not just for myself, but to bring joy to the children who truly deserve to smile.
Our two-day project at the Kids' Home focused on making a positive impact. On day one, we adjusted plans to clean two storage rooms and spent time with the children to create a cheerful atmosphere. On day two, we painted the playground equipment. I proposed two initiatives—monthly grocery packs and simple birthday celebrations—which were warmly accepted. The staff appreciated and thanked our team for our dedication and support throughout the project.
This project taught me the value of flexibility and teamwork, especially when plans change unexpectedly. I learned that even small efforts like cleaning or organizing celebrations can greatly improve others’ lives. Spending time with the children helped me develop empathy and understand the importance of bringing happiness to those in need. I also realized that leadership involves inspiring and supporting others, working together to achieve meaningful goals.
