FIFA World Cup's Album: a Recycling Challenge
During the FIFA World Cup, the Panini sticker album becomes extremely popular in Brazil. We discovered that the backing paper that protects the stickers (called liner paper) cannot be recycled through conventional recycling systems, yet most people are unaware of this and dispose of it incorrectly. We realized there was an opportunity not only to collect this waste, but also to educate our community about its proper destination. That was our motivation to take action.
First, we launched an educational campaign through flyers, posters, and face-to-face conversations. We created 9 collection points with boxes handmade by the Scouts to collect the material. During the campaign, the Scouts also identified and created new collection points, expanding the projetc's reach. After two months, we gathered all the collected the liner paper and sent it to Polpel, a specialized recycling company. The proceeds of its recycling will be donated to GRAACC Hospital.
We learned that very few people knew about the information we shared, which was concerning since the World Cup Album is extremely popular in Brazil. Therefore, we learned that something as simple as sharing proper information can go a long way in making a difference.
We also learned that when people have easy access to proper waste disposal, they are more willing to participate in the initiative, as shown by the very positive results from our collection points.
