1st Scouts of the World Discovery in Malaysia

The first Scouts of The World Discovery (SW Discovery) was successfully held on 23rd to 25th of June 2014, located at SEAMEO RECSAM, Penang. The SW Discovery was attended by 22 Rover Scouts where they are B-P Award holder and coming from various states in Malaysia such as Penang, Kedah, Kuala Kumpur, Johor and KLKM. 15 Leader and staff were working hard in support and succeed this SW Discovery. This SW Discovery last for 3 days 2 night, with several skill workshop, simulation games, Field Trip Exploration and Project Planning. This SW Discovery embarked another remarkable milestone in the scouting history in Malaysia. Two meaningful field trip which related to Elements in Scouts of the World had been arranged and participated fully by participants and staff. First field trip had visited Mangrove Forest Mini Education Center located at Sungai Acheh, Seberang Perai Selatan, that mini center is running by Penang Inshore Fishermen Welfare Association (PIFWA). Participants had expose to the importance of Mangrove Forest in conserve and sustain the shore biodiversities. Besides that, participants also expose to their effort in empower women by having women’s activity around the center. The second field trip held on second day and located at Tzu Chi Recycling and Education Center, Taman Lumba Kuda, Penang. Tzu Chi Recycling and Education Center is managed by Tzu Chi Foundation Penang and it is a community based and supported by local volunteers. This Recycling Center collect recyclable trash from all around the area and shorting out in the center, afterward all the sorted item will sell to contractor and the funding is use to support the Tzu Chi Dialysis Center. Participants was firstly brief by the center in-charge person about the important of recycling, after that all the participants was separated into a few team in sorting different type of recyclable item. SW Discovery was opening by National Chief Commissioner, YH Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Shahrum Bin Osman on the first night. On his opening speech, National Chief Commissioner had urge all the participants to contribute to society, states or nation by taking action in considering the benefit voluntary service in order to realize the slogan of WOSM “Creating the better World”. Important person in succeed this SW Discovery are Course Director, Tuan Haji Zulkafli Bin Kamaruddin, SW Coordinator, Tuan Haji Mohammad Zaki Bin Mohd Yussof. It is also an honour to have Mr Syd Castillo, Director of Youth Programme at World Scout Bureau of Asia-Pacific Region Office, to be together as consultant and guest speaker of this SW Discovery. Millennium Development Goals had been discussed and shared on the first day by Dr George Teoh Boon Sai to give opportunity for participants in discover and learn about the challenges of MDGs, thus to take positive action to local communities. Several skills workshop and interesting simulation had been conducted to equipped skills needed among participants to undertake a voluntary service.
