Like most ECD centres in Limpopo this one is situated in a rural area, and it was started with no knowledge of how to run and maintain an ECD centre. There’s a lot of trainings needed in many areas, however the group decided to tackle first aid.
This project was led by Scouter, Malatji Angelina, who has a first aid certificate and has done a first aid course, and delivered a number of trainings on first aid in the community. Angelina acknowledges that, in most cases children are sent home or to clinics when they have an injury or they stay at school till they feel better, because their carers do not know what to do.
Part of the training was to train the carers on what to do in cases of minor injuries that can occur during schools and how to treat them. The ECD teachers learnt a lot because there were things that they took for granted and after the training they realised they needed more trainings like this to help them improve the service that they give to the children.
At the end of the training the ECD centre was give first aid tool kits, and the group has promised to stay in touch with the centre and assist them with more trainings.
