Activity Description

Instructions

  1. Define the limits of the playground.
  2. The participants can move freely within the limits of the playground and run away from the Shadow Thief.
  3. One person is selected to be the Shadow Thief. This person tries to catch with his/her foot the shadow of somebody else. If the thief catches someone’s shadow, he/she loses the shadow and becomes the next Shadow Thief.

Exploring the Science Behind

  • The sun rises in the East and sets in the West. During the day, it “moves” along the sky in an arc (in fact, the earth is moving and not the sun).
  • When getting closer to midday, the shadow that an object (or a person) casts when standing in the sunlight will become shorter and shorter. After midday, the shadow will change the direction (now showing towards east) and will become longer and longer again, until the sun sets.
