On 30 July 2016, A Very Special Walk 2016 was held at the Enabling Village. The objective of this event was to help raise funds for the Autism Resource Centre Singapore. Our scout troop contributed to this event by helping to man various booths at the event. I was selected to help out with the Choo Choo Train ride in the morning. The person in charge of the ride positioned me around the main entrance of the venue, and got me to keep human traffic away from the train whenever it came around. The job went relatively smoothly, as the people were generally obedient, staying away from the train whenever it came around. The communication between the various people involved in this ride was also good. The main challenge of this job was having to stay under the sun for a long period of time. If I were to change something, it would be to have 1 or 2 less people positioned along the train’s route telling people to stay away, so that everyone can rotate between working and resting in the hot weather. Through this project, we have helped to raise funds for the Autism Resource Centre Singapore. With additional funding, they will be able to provide better services for people with special needs, thus helping to improve the lives of those with special needs. This project has also helped to raise awareness for people with special needs, a group that is not well regarded in Singapore, hence we hope that this project can help in creating a more kind and gracious society. My main takeaway from this experience would be that in a team, everybody’s role is important, no matter how big or how small. This is because while my job was simple, it was still important in ensuring that the train ride could run smoothly without being disrupted by pedestrians. It also helped to ensure the safety of visitors by preventing any accidents from occurring. Therefore, it can be seen that while my job was simple, it was still important. Hence, in a team, everybody’s role is important, no matter how big or how small it is. It is important for us to give back to our community because the community has helped us previously in various ways, such as having neighbours that treat us when we get injured. As scouts, we have to be loyal, therefore we should return favours from others and give back to the community. In scouts, we also learn about showing care and concern for others who require assistance. In the community, there are some people going through tough times that urgently need help. Therefore, we should give back and help these members of the community. In conclusion, helping out at A Very Special Walk 2016 was an enriching experience for me, and I certainly would not mind helping out with the event again in the future.
