Tiny Lives, Big Impact
Coastal development, light pollution, beach litter, and irresponsible tourism severely disrupt nesting and hatchling survival. Sea turtles are ancient mariners, vital to marine ecosystems, but their populations have drastically declined due to human activities and environmental threats. Keeping this in mind, the TTL Unit, along with the SrikaraBhanja Open Unit, planned to launch baby turtle rescue initiative.
30 nos. of Rover, Ranger, Scout, Guide, Cub, Bulbul, along with the members of Sattvic Soul Foundation, gathered at Podampeta Sea Beach of Ganjam. After a brief discussion and instructions, nests were identified and closely monitored. Hatchlings were guided toward the sea during early morning hours to minimize exposure to heat, predators, and artificial lights. In some cases, hatchlings that were trapped or disoriented were gently assisted to reach the ocean.
The success of the initiative depended on the cooperation between volunteers, wildlife experts, and local authorities. Clear communication and task delegation were essential. Continued efforts and community involvement are essential for ensuring that future generations of sea turtles can thrive.
