SCOUTS SA staff feed 100 people for Mandela Day

When SCOUTS SA’s national Mandela Day initiative called for Jars of Hope to be made and shared, the National Office team recognised this as an opportunity to contribute to both immediate hunger relief and the broader goal of supporting vulnerable homeless community members.
Together, the team sourced ingredients and jars, and packed 25 jars, each containing the makings of a wholesome meal. Ingredients included lentils, rice, split peas, soup mix, soup powder and stock cubes. In total they made enough to provide 100 warm servings. The completed jars were donated to the Somerset West Night Shelter, where they directly benefited individuals living on the streets.
The team was reminded of the daily struggles many people face just to have a warm meal. Participating in a structured community programme not only allowed them to make a tangible difference but also reinforced the importance of compassion and continued service. The experience reflected the core values of SCOUTS South Africa — giving back, supporting others, and living the spirit of service all year round.
