Operation: Clean-Up

On September 16, 2018, Hong Kong was hit by Typhoon Mangut, the most powerful typhoon to hit Hong Kong in nearly 20 years. The city took a battering, and although there was fortunately no loss of life, the the impact on the city, and the natural environment was severe. Winds clocked in at 109 mph in the city. Storm surge up to 11 feet set record water levels in most spots; in Hong Kong proper, the ocean climbed to its highest level since at least 1904. Waves just offshore towered up to 45 feet, tens of thousands of trees were brought down, and our costal communities, and Scout centres, were devestated.

Almost immediately, Scouts from the Silver Jubilee sprang into action, helping to clear depris from roads, paths and beaches. From individuals helping out in their community, to beach cleanups in Sai Kung, Operation: Clean-Up meant Scouts to do there part to try and get Hong Kong back on it's feet as soon as possible.
