World AIDS Day was first declared by the World Health Organization and the United Nations General Assembly in 1988. Since then, it has progressively become one of the most successful ‘international days’ for raising awareness on a global issue.World AIDS Day is a day dedicated to commemorate those who have passed on and to raise awareness about AIDS and the global spread of the HIV virus. The first World AIDS Day was held in 1988 after health ministers from around the world met in London, England and agreed to such a day as a way of highlighting the enormity of the AIDS pandemic and nations’ responsibility to ensure universal treatment, care and support for people living with HIV and AIDS. Led by the World AIDS Campaign organization, the theme for World AIDS Day 2014 is ”Getting to zero.” Zero New HIV Infections. Zero Discrimination and Zero AIDS-related deaths. According to the The Gap Report from UNAIDS, 1.5 million people worldwide died of AIDS-related illnesses in 2013. By the end of 2013, an estimated 35 million people around the world were living with HIV.Today World AIDS day is observed seriously in Lunglei and all over the District of Mizoram.Lunglei district Observed the day in Lunglei Higher Secondary school.Students and teachers of Lunglei town more than 1000 attended in the observation programme.Scouts and Guides take a arrange ment and ushering in the observance programme
