COVID-19 Vaccination Volunteers Program

In recognition of our role as advocates for youth and people development and in order to provide services as partners in the community and to assist with helping persons to be vaccinated we approached the Ministry of Heath Trinidad and Tobago and offered the use of our main activity centers in San Fernando, Port of Spain and Couva to be used as Vaccination Centers. At these centers it was also proposed that our members would provide volunteer services as ushers, data entry and administrative support. However, the logistics involved in creating our centers as vaccination sites needed to be addressed to properly establish a site that would be fit for purpose.

Still recognizing our role, on May 20th 2021, The Scout Association of Trinidad and Tobago, ScoutsTT issued a Mass Broadcast (including social media to) Members to volunteer to assist the Ministry of Health, Trinidad and Tobago at Covid-19 Vaccination Centers across Trinidad and Tobago. The volunteers were to provide the same services as envisaged if the activity centers were being used.

The Health system in Trinidad is divided into five (5) Regional Health Authorities, four in Trinidad and 1 in Tobago, each having their mandate to establish vaccination sites which they would operate with staff in their employ. Our services were therefore offered to the four Authorities in Trinidad as they required assistance, as opposed to Tobago where the process was being managed more smoothly.

Our call was well responded to by our members and members of the public also expressed their interest to join in the response. On May 24th the first group of volunteers was assigned to The National Racquet Center in Tacarigua which was operated by the Eastern Regional Health Authority. On May 27th a second team was assigned to the UTT Campus Monroe Road Chaguanas which was operated by the ), North Central Regional Health Authority and on June 7th another team was assigned to the Southern Academy of the Performing Arts/ SAPA operated by South West Regional Health Authority

During the first 2 weeks, we had 50 persons offering their services and the numbers continued to grow. At these sites, five hundred persons were vaccinated on average on a daily basis.

Volunteers stationed at each Center were tasked with various jobs;

1. Checking off names on the List at the Gate.

2. Registration of persons.

3. Ushering those who came to get Vaccinations through the process.

4. Calling those who previously got Vaccinated to give them their next appointment and follow up on any reactions to the vaccine they might have had.

5. Data Entry including database management, writing of vaccination cards, and other critical data for post-vaccination follow-up.
