2SW Cubs feed hungry for Mandela Day

SCOUTS SA's annual Mandela Day initiative was Jars of Hope. 2nd Somerset West's Pack joined in to help local homeless people. The Jars were given to "Thomas House of Hope", who provide a hand-up programme with 2 meals a day, shower and laundry facilities. To get a meal and use the services, homeless people need to participate in various services eg working in the vegetable gardens, participating in group activities, applications for ID etc.
The Cubs were asked to bring at least 1 clean coffee jar to Cubs. Each Six was asked to provide specific ingredients for the Jars which provide a warm and nutritious meal for 4 people per Jar. This included: lentils, soup mix, split peas, soup powder, rice and stock cubes. Those who were not present were asked to bring their own one, made at home. A total of 27 Jars were made. A Thomas House of Hope representative came and spoke about homelessness, how they help, and how the public can help.
We are privileged to have 3 cooked meals a day. It's important for us to help those who are not as privileged. We are living out our Promise of doing a good deed every day. The programme run by Thomas House is one of no judgement but rather encouragement to participate in the programme. "If we have enough, we should make our tables bigger not our fences higher." A quote from the book Manna and Mercy by Daniel Erlander
