Scouts de España and the climate summit

Scouts de España and the climate summit

Madrid hosted the Conference of the Parties or COP25 and from Scouts de España, as an entity committed to caring for the environment, we took this opportunity to contribute to creating a better world and attended the Climate Summit, which was held from 2 to 13 December.

We were in both zones: the green zone, a space of participation for collectives, organizations and all civil society, and the blue zone, that of political decisions.

On December 6, part of the Scout Team was present: the president, Elena Cabezas; the communication coordinator, Álvaro Sánchez; and the participation and belonging coordinator, Sara del Campo; the manager of the organization, Lucía Menéndez; and nine volunteers. It was an intense day in which we had a full day: we attended the two areas of the event and the March for Climate that ran through the streets of Madrid in the afternoon.

In the blue zone, the Scout Team visited the different stands of the attending countries to learn about the actions they are carrying out to comply with Agenda 2030, to which Scouts de España is absolutely committed. We exchanged opinions with different personalities and institutions about the role we are developing and how the small actions we carry out together become a great potential for the defence of the planet.

Manuel Ramos, president of the Consejo de la Juventud de España and member of Scouts de España, was in the Debate Table of the COP25 transmitting the need to achieve real participation of youth in the development of environmental policies through organizations and youth movements as youth.

And that was what we showed in the green zone during the four days we participated (6, 10, 11 and 13): we used different games (wordsearch, ecobingo, etc.) so that girls and boys who visited our stand could learn by playing (SDG 4) on circular economy (SDG 12), renewable energy (SDG 7), melting ice (SDG 13) and desertification (SDG 15).

We have invited all the scouts of the organization to visit the green zone and participate in the demonstration because all, and in particular, beavers, wolves, scouts, sculptors and rovers, to raise awareness of the importance of exercising environmental protection from all sides, and to encourage alliances, key to achieving our mission.

“As scouts we are ambassadors and brand ambassadors of the fight against climate change, and that is why we had to be at the climate summit. We have tried to inculcate our maxim of building a better world in the girls and boys who have attended COP 25 with their families or schools. We have talked about very serious concepts such as that the poles are melting or that desertification is advancing, but in a playful way and based on 'doing doing'”, said Elena Cabezas, President of Scouts de España.
