Nature Discovery: Engaging Youth in Biodiversity
**Project Title: "Nature Discovery: Engaging Youth in Biodiversity Conservation"**
**Objective:**
Empower youth aged 11 to 14 to explore and appreciate biodiversity through the use of the Seek app by iNaturalist, fostering a deeper understanding of the natural world and promoting action for its conservation.
**Duration:**
30 minutes
**Key Competencies Developed:**
- Systems thinking
- Critical thinking
**Materials Needed:**
- Seek by iNaturalist app
- Real-time Computer Vision predictions in Seek by iNaturalist version 2.0
- Our Planet Lab toolkit
- Mobile device
**Activity Description:**
Participants will be introduced to the Seek app by iNaturalist, a tool that utilizes image recognition technology to identify wildlife and plant species in real-time. They will then be invited to use the app during outdoor activities to discover the natural environment around them. Through this hands-on experience, participants will learn about the importance of biodiversity and how they can contribute to its preservation.
**Facilitation Tips:**
- Provide a brief tutorial on how to use the Seek app, including how to take photos and receive species identifications.
- Encourage participants to explore different habitats and ecosystems to maximize their species discoveries.
- Facilitate discussions on the significance of the species identified, their roles within the ecosystem, and potential conservation actions.
**Project Outcomes:**
- Increased awareness and appreciation of biodiversity among youth participants.
- Enhanced critical thinking skills through hands-on exploration and observation of the natural world.
- Promotion of environmental stewardship and action for biodiversity conservation among young people.
**Key Benefits of Using the Seek App:**
- Developing a deeper appreciation for nature and biodiversity.
- Enhancing knowledge of wildlife and plant species.
- Fostering a sense of connection to the natural world and a desire to protect it.
By engaging youth in this interactive activity, we aim to inspire future generations to become advocates for biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability.
