Australian Scouts become Messengers of Peace

Scouts from 1st Lilli Pilli Sea Scout Troop in NSW, Australia joined the Scouts Messengers of Peace Initiative in May 2019. Our Troop joined The Peace Crane Project (www.peacecraneproject.org) to exchange origami cranes and messages of Peace with a student group in Iowa, USA. We chose Mother's Day to make our origami cranes, involving our Scout mums in the process of sharing the message of peace around the world. Our mums helped their Scouts fold the cranes and write letters to our exchange group. We also shared the story of Sadako Sasaki, the young Japanese girl who tragically lost her life to leukemia as a result of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Following Japanese folklore Sadako folded over 1000 origami cranes in the hope that her wish to live would come true. Sadako's life is remembered worldwide through the folding of origami cranes to wish for Peace. We also included Origami Crane making as an activity at one of our Amazing Race Checkpoints through the city of Sydney on the 19th May, 2019 to spread the message of Peace. This Checkpoint was located at a very special place for Scouts, the Scout Compass in Circular Quay (on the foreshore of Sydney Harbour). We hope that our actions will help to spread the message of Peace Around the World!
