Strengthening Safe Scouting in Myanmar
Myanmar Scout Association recognized the need to strengthen safeguarding systems and ensure that Scouting provides a safe and supportive environment for children, young people and adults. Through the WOSM Messengers of Peace (MoP) Fund-supported “Scouts in Action: Back on Track” project, we aimed to strengthen understanding of Safe from Harm and develop a national framework aligned with World Scouting standards.
Myanmar Scout Association conducted a three-day National Safe from Harm Workshop with 34 participants, including national and regional Scout leaders and youth representatives. Through presentations, group discussions, case scenarios and consultations, participants explored safeguarding principles, Code of Conduct, reporting mechanisms and responsibilities. Their recommendations contributed to the development and review of Myanmar Scout’s National Safe from Harm Policy.
We learned that safeguarding must be understood and practiced by everyone in Scouting, not only through a policy. Open discussions and practical scenarios helped participants better understand risks, responsibilities and appropriate responses. Involving leaders and youth representatives also created stronger ownership of Safe from Harm across the association.
