Scouts providing food and compassion to refugees in Greece
During the month of March, 12 scouts from around the world joined foodKIND, a humanitarian organization founded and run by a scout, to support their mission of providing food and compassion to refugees in crisis. This mission was generously funded by Kandersteg International Scout Centre who raised the money through their international BBQ project during the summer of 2016.
The project run by foodKIND supports almost 200 refugees who survive by living on the streets or in abandoned buildings. Receiving no formal support, this group of refugees are extremely vulnerable and rely completely on foodKIND to supply all of their most basic needs.
With the help and support from the Scout volunteers, foodKIND were able to establish a permanent food distribution project providing two meals a day to the refugees along with compassion, support and friendship. During the mission, the Scouts also helped to set up a new kitchen and volunteer accommodation which will allow the organization to work more effectively and efficiently and for a longer period of time. Although the project is primarily about distributing food, the Scouts also had the opportunity to get to know the people living there, hear their stories and share their own experiences. Through this process, both sides had the opportunity to learn about each other and their cultures and a new level of understanding was formed. As a result, the Scouts were able to bring a little bit of light into an otherwise dark situation and extend the hand of friendship and peace to those in need.
