The President Team: Chief Scout Hospitality Istana Service Duty

The President Team: Chief Scout Hospitality Istana Service Duty

The Istana, Istana means palace in Berhasa Melayu, the place where our President works and reside. The compound opens for public visits on 5 occasion in a year, during the 5 occasions, The Singapore Scout Association will sent volunteers to assist in crowd control and assist various stations or booth to help visitors to have a more pleasant experience during their visit. Upon arrival at the main entrance of the Istana, visitors will be greeted by the first group of Scouts who will guide them to the appropriate queue line to get their entry tickets and to answer any questions should they have any about the open house. After entering, visitors who are wheelchair bound will be greeted by another group of Scouts who will help them push the wheelchair where ever they wanted to go and at the same time we can chat with them and let the family who accompany them had a happy experience while inside the Istana compound. During every open house, the Istana compound will have many activities like games and performances to let visitors enjoy and had a great time. The mechandise and sourvenirs booth where visitors get to buy drink and sourvenirs, the earnings of all sales will be proceed to the Presidents Star Charity. Our Scouts will be station here to help crowd control and explaining to visitors that all sales of any products are for charity. Next will be the State Room, this building is where our President works and where gifts from various foreign countries will be display. There's a booth here where visitors had to buy entry tickets to enter and also guided tour to the state room and nature tour. Scouts are station here to control the crowd and to guide visitors to the appropriate queue line to get their entry pass and also to explain to them what is the state room about. Through out the 5 duties that i've done, i've learnt to be more humble and considerate, putting others need first before myself. As a leader, i've learnt to be more encouraging to the other boys and girls who volunteered for the service duty, to get them to open up and speak to the members of the public. I also find out that it's also a plus point that i'm able to speak not just english and mandarin, but also different dialects like cantonese, teochew and hokkien. This is especially useful when explaining things to visitors from different countries. And finally. i've learnt to be more vigilant on looking out for suspicious characters or suspicious items or packages or bags. As the place is open to the public, many visitors from local or foreign countries will be moving around. Even at the entry point where members of the public are queing up to enter the Istana, at certain point of time there can be as much as few hundred visitors in line, being vigilant also ensure safety of the visitors and ourselves. We can never be complacent when come to safety, i believe our presents during the events will help promote Scouting and at the same time help keeping peace and safety of the visitors while they're enjoying their time during the open house of the Istana.
