Plant a Tree, Grow with a Tree
In Malawi, many school students spend almost the whole day at school, and many of them leave their homes with no breakfast and no money to buy lunch at school. This contributes to poor performance in class because they end up losing concentration due to hunger. Through "Plant a Tree, Grow with a Tree," initiative, we planted fruit trees in secondary and primary schools. These fruit trees will help students get the energy they need for the day at school.
We reached out to the Catholic Scouts for them to provide us with fruit trees to plant in different schools in our community. Through the partnership, we were able to secure four hundred and fifty fruit trees. We also further expanded our partnership with the Malawi government forestry department in the southern region and secured 1,500 trees for our ongoing tree planting exercise. Through the initiative, we have been able to plant fruit trees in 10 schools.
Working on this tree planting project taught me how much partnerships can accelerate impact. Reaching out to the Catholic Scouts gave us access to 650 fruit trees, and expanding to the Malawi government forestry department added another 4,500 trees, which made it possible to reach 10 schools. I learned that starting with a clear need, students going hungry and losing concentration, makes it easier to bring people on board, because the benefit is obvious to everyone involved
