A Pioneering Project to stop Suffering from Hunger

I wanted to get involved in a local community project. I live in Muizenbeg and a local food garden approached our Group for some help. I have attended many food distribution through the 1st Muizenberg pack as my Mom is an Assistant Pack Scouter and they have been working with an organisation that helps feed the homeless people in Muizenberg. I have gone to help feed them many times and by helping in the garden it will help grow food for them going forward.
Angela MacPherson, a local artist, wanted to bring her design to life. The structure was designed to create a canopy for growing vegetables in the Muizenberg Food Garden. I asked 1st Muizenberg Scouts to help. We also taught the gardeners how to do lashings. 16 hours spent over 5 days. The ground had to be prepared and lashings on the poles / staves to build the structure. I donated R300 pocket money earned over the last 3 months for seeds and compost doing extra chores making up over 20 hours
The Community Garden is funded by donations from the Muizenberg Community. It is run by volunteers, and they work with the New Hope House two days a week. Food that is harvested from the garden is donated to the Muizenberg Kitchen. Workshops are hosted at the space and it is also used as outdoor nature class rooms. The structure will help grow food for many for years to come and also help provide a safe area to educate many children in the future, the impact could benefit thousands of people.
This project was Awesome because it was nice meeting new people that volunteer their time to help those in need. Growing food is important because you need food to live. I learnt that a lot of people don't even have a nutritious meal every day. Growing vegetables is something everyone can do and help feed people who don't have food. I can make it better by keeping the Scouts involved by helping in the Gardens and encouraging more scouts to go and help..
