Eagle project for Michael A. Cullen, BSA Troop 3 Newport.  Leveraging the privileges of his FCC Amateur Radio license (call sign K6MAC), Mac sought to improve the Town of Portsmouth's ability to respond to a broad set of community emergencies. Mac proposed leading a five part project that would:  (1) yield a strategic, point-to-point,  high-speed, Internet link to a Providence Police site in Providence, (2) establish an omni-directional "smart mesh" network for the Portsmouth-Middletown area, (3) create a secure low-power access point for police/fire laptop users, (4) collect and analyze -- with scout help -- resulting radio coverage data at the regional American Red Cross shelter (Gaudet Middle School, Middletown) and Portsmouth High School, and (5) promote general interest in the use and application of mesh networking using the special features of the Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network (AREDN).  This project is expected to provide an exemplar for other New England towns.
