Clean Surroundings, Healthy Community: A Service Project at Changangkha Lhakhang
We were inspired to take up this project because keeping our surroundings clean is important for maintaining good health, protecting the environment, and showing respect for places that are important to our community and culture. We wanted to contribute through a simple but meaningful act of service while learning that cleanliness is a shared responsibility. Cleaning around Changangkha Lhakhang also gave us an opportunity to serve our community while demonstrating respect for our cultural values and religious traditions.
The project was implemented at and around Changangkha Lhakhang, where we organized ourselves into three groups to carry out the cleaning work respectfully and efficiently. Students wearing Gho and Kira were assigned to clean inside and around the lhakhang, while students wearing pants and shirts worked in the areas farther away from the lhakhang in order to respect the cultural and religious significance of the site. We collected waste, cleaned the surrounding areas, and worked cooperatively to improve the cleanliness of the environment while following appropriate cultural practices and showing respect for the sacred space.
The project helped improve the cleanliness and appearance of the surroundings of Changangkha Lhakhang and created a more pleasant environment for visitors and the local community. It also helped students develop a stronger sense of responsibility toward cleanliness, environmental care, and community service. Most importantly, the activity strengthened our understanding that caring for our surroundings is a shared responsibility and that community service should be carried out with both dedication and respect for our cultural and religious values.
Through this project, we learned that maintaining clean surroundings requires cooperation, responsibility, discipline, and regular effort from everyone. We understood that even a small contribution, such as collecting waste or cleaning a pathway, can make a positive difference when people work together. We also learned the importance of respecting cultural and religious places while carrying out community service. In the future, we could improve the project by involving more students and community members, preparing cleaning materials in advance, assigning clear responsibilities, and organizing regular cleaning activities to maintain the area over a longer period.
