Clean Sri Lanka
The project was inspired by observing the growing issue of waste accumulation around railway stations and public spaces, which affects both environmental sustainability and public health. As Scouts committed to service and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), we felt it was our responsibility to take initiative. We wanted to not only clean the environment but also build a culture of environmental responsibility among young people and the wider community.
The project was implemented in three phases: organized clean-up campaigns around selected railway stations with Scout volunteers and local authority support; public awareness through leaflets, brief commuter engagement, and educational posters; and recognition of the most active troops to encourage sustained participation. Progress was tracked through attendance records, photo documentation, and waste collection data.
The project taught us the importance of structured planning, teamwork, and community collaboration in achieving meaningful impact. We learned that combining direct action, such as clean-up campaigns, with public awareness and recognition mechanisms creates more sustainable behavioral change. It also strengthened youth leadership, accountability, and the value of consistent monitoring to measure real results.
