1st Point Cook Joey Scout Mob – Help other People: Jamieson Way Playgroup Gardens

1st Point Cook Joey Scout Mob – Help other People: Jamieson Way Playgroup Gardens

We launched our Messengers of Peace badge work with a discussion about scouting around the world and how together Scouts are spreading the message of peace through their pledges to the program and service projects that help other people. Each of the Joey Scouts in our mob decorated a sign pledging their commitment to peace for all which together with their pictures is displayed in our local Community Centre. To help others in our community, we undertook as a mob to rework the playgroup gardens at the Jamieson Way Community Centre. The gardens had become overgrown and were in desperate need of some attention. We replanted eleven of the large pots in the garden and added in some re-purposed planters (two wheelbarrows and several shoes learning about reusing and recycling at the same time as how to plant out seedlings). In addition to our program night, we held two planting days which various Joey Scouts and their parents attended where we replanted the playground vegetable garden and mulched all the adjoining community gardens. We also added in a scarecrow and vegetable markers for all the different types of plants. As the plants mature, the playgroup parents will be encouraged to harvest the fresh vegetables for their families. This will be an ongoing project with the mob pledging to help in the continued maintenance of this area and upkeep of the gardens in the future. We hope this project will teach both the Joey Scouts and playgroup children about nature, nutrition and the responsibility of maintaining the gardens as well as spread our message of peace to the community through helping others.
