1st Newborough Cubs Celebrate Cultural Diversity
Harmony Day is an annual celebration of friendship and belonging which takes place on 21st March in Australia. The 1st Newborough Cub Scouts celebrated Harmony Day by exploring Australia’s rich cultural diversity and discovering ways in which different ethnic groups have contributed to making our country an interesting and exciting place to live.
To begin the evening the Cubs sang ‘I Am Australian’ then shared their own families’ stories of migration. The children were excited to discover just how many different nationalities they were descended from including Chinese, Dutch, English, Irish, Scottish, Canadian and Maltese.
The Cubs enjoyed playing ‘Ki-O-Rahi’, a traditional Maori ball game. They soon realized that a lot of skill and strategy is required to play the game well.
However, the highlight of the evening was a huge multicultural feast. The colour, variety and aroma of the food was overwhelmingly mouthwatering. Among the offerings were Chinese dumplings, Figolli (Maltese biscuits), Boterkoek (Dutch butter shortcake), Wieners (German sausage), Chicken tefteli (Russian meatballs) and the humble British scone with jam and cream. It is safe to say that no one left the Scout hall feeling hungry.
Harmony Day reminds us about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone which are values core to the Scouting movement.
