1st Durbanville Scouts: Beach Clean Up

The 2026 Scout National Challenge is all about water safety and one of the tasks was an environmental service project. Cape Town's beaches always need a clean up! We wanted to make a difference and show our community that Scouts care about our marine health.

We sent out an invitation to our scouts and met at Big Bay beach in Cape Town for a massive beach clean up. The scouts arrived armed with rubbish bags and gloves and spread out along the beach as far as Eerstesteen Nature Reserve. We gathered over 70 large bin bags of rubbish that has been strewn along the beach.

Apart from the rubbish that washes up on our beaches from ships, people also simply leave a great deal of litter behind when they leave at the end of a day at the beach. We aim to do regular beach clean ups in large groups to create awareness of the need for people to clean up after themselves and also to participate in beach clean ups.
