A partnership between the Scouts of Namibia and Scouts from Forth Region in Scotland has seen the the residents of Omakange village in Namibia benefit from a school kindergarten, garden and scouts camping ground. Built entirely by Scouts at a cost of nearly USD 200,000 on a piece of land donated by King Josia Tshikongo Taapopi to Scouts of Namibia, the kindergarten features a solar-powered classroom building, outdoor ablution facilities and security fencing. The 1.5 hectares garden consists of two greenhouses, a borehole, a solar-powered water pump and a 5,000-liter water tank. The kindergarten aims at providing quality pre-school education for children up to 6 years old who cannot walk great distances to the local school. Vegetables grown in the greenhouses will be used to feed the pre-schoolers, while surplus produce will be sold to raise funds for the kindergarten’s upkeep and other needs.
