Tukundane Anthony, a Scout from Uganda was among the participants who took part in the 2017 edition of the Inter-American Leadership Training held in from 28 December 2017 to 3 January 2018 in Quito, Ecuador. The training was attended by participants from 41 countries around the world. The Africa Scout Region was represented by two participants, Anthony from Uganda and Mahachi Takunda from Zimbabwe. The training’s focus was on improving the life experiences of young people to strengthen Scouting in the National Scouting Organizations in the Inter-American Region, with the objectives to: strengthen the capacity of young people for active participation, develop leadership skills in the young people and to improve communication and networking among the youth and with adults. Speaking of his experience at the International Leadership Training, Anthony says that: “As a youth leader the opportunity to meet fellow youth from different continents was an exciting opportunity. We shared various challenges facing young people and their possible solutions, learned new cultures and shared new opinions about Messengers of Peace programme. While as ILT 2017 group we were all assigned tasks for carrying out MOP projects and this will increase awareness and effectiveness of Scouting to the community and also increase on the service hours on scouting platforms. During the training, we held discussions on a number of issues namely; understanding the Messengers of Peace programme, designing community service projects, Team development, problem solving and decision making, effective communication and Scouting values. We were also assigned tasks to develop and implement community service projects back at homes as way of contributing to the enhancement of Scouting’s social impact in our communities. I acquired leadership skills in problem solving, effective communication and team development apart from making new friends from all over the world.” As part of the recommendations going forward, Anthony - who is also the Chairperson of the Eastern Africa Zonal Scout Youth Forum - encourages National Scout Organizations to also create more of such opportunities for young people to develop their capacities for deeper engagement in the leadership of Scouting at local, national, regional and global levels. “Through such training, Scouting can produce great leaders who will be custodians of the values of the movement and the sustainability of their societies,” he adds.
