The former President of Tanzania, His Excellency Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, was greeted with a warm welcome by the Association of Scouts of Azerbaijan and the participants of the 41st World Scout Conference at the Baku Congress Centre. He was at the Conference to deliver his keynote speech on Monday, 14 August 2017. In his speech, Kikwete said that what is even more encouraging, is the fact that within this decade, membership increased from just 32 million members in 2010 to 40 million today. At this pace, therefore, he was optimistic that the Scout Movement's vision to have 100 million members by 2023 is achievable. Kikwete who was born on 7 October 1951, however, added that, “Numbers in themselves may not say much about the Scout Movement. The significance of the Movement is in its objectives, the way it functions and the impact it has generated to the world, and the lives it has touched”. He emphasized that the primary objective of the Scout Movement is to promote an all rounded education to young people with the aim of giving them a sense of purpose in life, patriotism and a sense of duty to the nation and humanity. “Also, to make them appreciate the importance of working together with others,” he said. Although he did not have the opportunity to be a Scout when he was young, his four sons are ardent Boy Scouts. He said that it is heartening to note that Scouts are living up to the ideals of the Movement and the expectations of its founding father. There are many examples of the good work being done by Boy Scouts and Girl Guides the world over. There is no doubt that during any major crisis or natural and manmade disasters people are likely to encounter and be graced by the helping hand of a Scout. “This is a huge contribution and service to humanity for which this Movement should be proud of,” the former President of Tanzania added.
