Scouts Coral Reef Restoration

In Indonesia, coral reef fisheries are in crisis due to the use of bombs and poisons to catch the fish. The Former Indonesian President Megawati Sukarno Putri at the International Coral Reef Symposium held in Bali on October 2000 said that around 94% of Indonesia's coral reefs were already severely damaged. Pasir Putih in Situbondo, East Java is one of them. From 4 coral reef locations, Teluk Pelita has 50,61% living coral coverage and 20,17/m2 reef-fish abundance. Karang Mayit has 32,92% living coral coverage and 22,79/m2 of reef-fish abundance; Batu Lawang with 27,59% living coral coverage and 10,58/m2 reef-fish abundance; Kembang Sambi with 22,49% living coral coverage and 7,01/m2 reef-fish abundance. Based on aforementioned condition, Gerakan Pramuka Indonesia in association with East Java Scouts Divers held “Scouts Coral Restoration”. This is an activity of underwater conservation as well as artificial reef cleaning up and building performed at Pasir Putih, Situbondo, East Java. This project was supported by the World Scout Foundation (WSF) through the Messengers of Peace (MoP) Indonesia program. The activities include the diving training for local scouts and youth, the workshop on coral reef conservation, and the coral reef conservation itself.Training local scouts and local youth to dive has been held in February 2012. By doing this activity, participants not only getting open water diver certification from POSSI (Indonesian Sub aquatic Sport Association) but also get basic skill and knowledge regarding safe diving. Therefore, they are ready to take an action in conservation activities. The participants were very enthusiastic about the training and proud to be involved in Messengers of Peace project. The next activity held was workshop on coral reef conservation, March 2012. We invited the expert from Sepuluh November Institute of Technology from Surabaya for delivering the material regarding coral reef planting and conservation. The participant got a more technical knowledge of how to perform the real action of coral reef planting and conservation.  After following training and workshop, participants of Scouts Coral Restoration also did real actions by developing the artificial coral reefs. The number of coral reefs targeted from this SCR activity is as many as 40 blocks consisting of more than 100 coral reefs (±160 coral reefs). The planting of the coral reeves was done gradually through four steps or batches. At the end, the total number of the planted coral reefs was 160.  Last but not least, as the youth generations of the nation and also the good Scouts, let's give our love and care our surrounding environment, including ocean life, in order to create a better and a more peaceful world.
