Gerakan Pramuka has a special troop which concerns on the sustainability of forest, namely “Saka Wanabakti”. The word “Saka” means Scout special group or troop, while “wana” means forest and “bakti” means service. This Saka Wanabakti, in collaboration with Gerakan Pramuka and the Indonesian Ministry of Forest and Environment, organized The 4th National Scout Forestry Camp or Perkemahan Bakti Saka Wanabakti Tingkat Nasional Ke-4, more familiarly known as “PERTIWANA IV” after 10 years of elapsed time since the last forestry camp was held in 2004. PERTIWANA IV was held at Cibubur National Campground, Jakarta, 15-20 December 2014. The big theme of PERTIWANA IV itself is “One Scout, One Tree”, meaning that each Scout member can participate and contribute to plant and ‘guard’ at least one tree in a lifetime to protect our forest. This theme was manifested in one of the camp activities, which is “Gerakan Menanam Pohon” or the Tree-Planting Movement on December 16, 2014 in which participants went to Bekasi, part of West Java, and planted 420 trees along the side of Tol Jagorawi (Jagorawi Toll Road/Highway). One Scout/participant planted one tree. PERTIWANA IV used “zero-waste camp” concept, meaning that participants and everybody living in the camp for a week are not ‘allowed’ to litter. Participants and committee are given one multi-used bottle each. Clean/drinking water is provided everywhere and everybody is free to refill their bottles anywhere, anytime. Participants also learned to make beautiful costumes from recycled materials like used papers, used canes etc. to be performed at the costume contest. There was trash bin-painting activity to transform the ‘ordinary’ trash bin into something interesting, and the committee chose 3 best and most creative paintings of all. Besides, there was also a competition to become the Forest Prince and Princess. These all were done to encourage Scouts to contribute in conservation and go-green lifestyle. Other activities are educational tour to Bogor Botanical Garden where participant observed and learned about various species of green plants. Here is also the place where the rare and endemic flower Rafflesia arnoldii is kept. Bogor Botanical Garden, like Cibubur National Campground, becomes the main contributors to the oxygen supply for Jabodetabek (Jakarta-Bogor-Depok-Tangerang-Bekasi) area, for both are large areas where thousands of trees grow and be maintained. Another destination of educational tour is Taman Safari Indonesia (Indonesia Animals Park) in which wild and endangered animals are protected in sets which are made similar to the habitat they lived previously - not inside the cage like how they are kept in the zoo. Participants boarded on several buses so that they were able to see wild animals from a ‘close’ distance. Gerakan Pramuka was beyond happy to host 12 foreign participants coming from two neighborhood countries, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam. There were 8 participants from Malaysia and 7 participants from Brunei. These 12 participants were given the chance to visit Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park (the word “gunung” means “mountain”) at Cianjur, part of West Java. This Gede Pangrango area is believed to be one of the habitats where Owa Jawa (The Javanese Owa) lives. Owa Jawa itself is a rare animals protected by Indonesian Law, which becomes the icon of PERTIWANA IV. Accompanied by 3 Liaison Officers and 8 local guides, foreign participants did the hiking to Cibeureum waterfall and Gede Pangrango Canopy trail. Overall, it was a nice experience to directly get in touch with the nature and observe its beauty as well as learn how to contribute in natural conservation and to protect inhabitants living in the forest and its surroundings.
