TONDO, MANILA, PHILIPPINES – “A boy scout is always ready.” That is what others think of scouts, or in some extent – expected of them. A scout should always be ready to help and offer assistance whenever needed, be him being in uniform or not. However, this spirit of being ready to help should be coupled with the basic skills necessary for any scout to be able to do so. This had been the idea behind the planning and conduct of a scout activity (Day Camp). Almost a hundred scouts from different schools within Area 2 of the BSP Manila Council participated in the said activity. Mostly are newbies but there are some who have been used to these kinds of scouting activities. The activity was thoroughly planned by Scouters Lyndon Duldulao of Lakan Dula Elementary School and Scouter Maricris Arcabos of Melchora Aquino Elementary School. The activities included ensures that the scouts who would participate would acquire the necessary skills needed to become a beginning scout. Like the standard procedure in scouting activities, the day began with the honoring of the Philippine flag and showing reverence to God, reflecting the first and foremost duties of a scout to God and country. The “Base Method” was utilized during the activity. The scouts were divided into four groups. Each group will then have a specific “base” wherein they will learn a particular skill from. At the course of the activity, discipline was strongly imposed. While this might seem stiff and boring to some, for the scouts, this was something that they look forward to. The spirit of curiosity and enjoyment can be felt in the atmosphere of the venue. The day ended by giving the scouts the blessing from the Scout Benediction. Also, they were given booklets wherein the skills that were discussed this day were included. In the end, the feeling of exhaustion on the part of the scouters were replaced by the feeling of satisfaction, knowing that through this activity, they have touched the lives of these scouts.
