Twice in 3 days members of the 14th Fermanagh Scout Group (Derrylin) answered the call. This time it was a beach clean up to rid one of our pristine beaches of plastic and waste. Over 30 members of the scout group spent thier Easter Saturday clearing the rubbish from Mervagh Beach. From the very youngest who was 6 to the oldest 56 we all felt proud in what we achieved. We explained to the scouts that our oceans are filled with items that do not belong there. Huge amounts of plastics, metals, rubber, paper, textiles, discarfed fishing nets, and other lost or discarded items enter the ocean every day, making ocean debris one of the most widespread pollution problems facing the world's ocean and waterways.The ultimate solution to the problem lies with every single one of us preventing ocean debris in the first place. First we teach the scouts how we might personally contribute to ocean debris and follow the “4Rs” whenever possible— Refuse unnecessary single-use items, like plastic straws or cutlery when possible; Reduce the amount of waste you produce by choosing products with less packaging; Reuse items when you can and choose reusable items over disposable ones; and Recycle as much as possible— bottles, mobile phones, ink cartridges, and many other items can be recycled. Next, spread the word to others! Tell your family, friends, community about this important issue and what they can do to help. So let's all answer the call and make a difference and help make this world litter free.
